7 Days in Morocco with a Private Driver: Marrakech, the Sahara and the Atlantic Coast
A realistic one-week itinerary from Marrakech: the High Atlas, Aït Ben Haddou, the Dades and Todra gorges, a night in the Sahara dunes and a day on the Atlantic coast — with driving times and tips for each day.

One week is the most common length for a first trip to Morocco — long enough to see much more than Marrakech, short enough that every day counts. With a private driver, you can combine the imperial red city, the High Atlas, the kasbah road, a night in the Sahara dunes and the Atlantic coast without wasting time on connections. Here is a realistic itinerary we often recommend, with driving times for each day.
Day 1: arrival in Marrakech
Your driver meets you at the airport with your name on a sign and takes you to your riad or hotel — see our Marrakech airport transfer. Settle in, enjoy a mint tea on the terrace and, in the evening, walk to Jemaa el-Fna square for the atmosphere and the food stalls.
- Driving: 20–30 minutes from the airport
- Tip: read your first 24 hours in Marrakech.
Day 2: Marrakech
A full day in the city: the Bahia Palace, the Koutoubia, the Saadian Tombs, the souks and the Jardin Majorelle. A driver for the day makes it easy to link the sights spread across the city and avoid walking in the midday heat — see Marrakech in one day with a private driver.
Day 3: High Atlas and Aït Ben Haddou → Dades valley
Leave early and cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), with photo stops at viewpoints and Berber villages. Visit Aït Ben Haddou, the famous fortified village, then continue past Ouarzazate and the oasis of Skoura to the Dades valley, where you sleep in a guesthouse facing the red cliffs.
- Driving: about 6–7 hours with stops
- Variant: take the old caravan road via Telouet and the Ounila valley.
Day 4: Dades and Todra gorges → Merzouga
Drive up the Dades gorges in the morning light, then continue to the Todra gorge, where you walk between 300-metre cliffs. In the afternoon, cross the plains to Merzouga. At sunset, ride camels into the dunes of Erg Chebbi and spend the night in a desert camp under the stars.
Day 4: the road through the Todra Gorge, on the way to the Sahara.
- Driving: about 5 hours with stops
- Read: Todra and Dades gorges guide
Day 5: Sahara sunrise → Ouarzazate or the Draa valley
Wake up early for sunrise over the dunes — one of the great moments of the trip. After breakfast, ride back to Merzouga and start the return west, via the Draa valley and its palm groves or via the Dades road, to sleep near Ouarzazate or Aït Ben Haddou.
- Driving: about 6–7 hours, the longest day — but with beautiful landscapes
Day 6: Ouarzazate → Marrakech
A relaxed return over the Atlas, with time for a last kasbah visit or a lunch with a view on the Tichka road. Arrive in Marrakech mid-afternoon for a last stroll in the souks or a hammam.
- Driving: about 4 hours
Day 7: Essaouira day trip or departure
If your flight is late in the day or you have one more day, head to Essaouira on the Atlantic coast: ramparts, the fishing port, seafood lunch and a walk on the beach, with a stop at an argan cooperative on the way. Return to Marrakech in the evening — or, even better, finish your trip on the coast and fly home from Agadir.
- Driving: about 2 h 45 each way
- Read: Essaouira day trip itinerary
Why with a private driver?
- No connections: the same vehicle and driver from day 3 to day 6, with your luggage safe on board.
- Your pace: stop for photos, extend a lunch, skip a visit.
- Comfort and safety: mountain roads and long distances with an experienced driver.
- Simple pricing: a fixed price per vehicle, which becomes very reasonable for families and groups.
Our Merzouga desert tour covers days 3 to 5, and van hire with driver covers the whole week.
Adapting the itinerary
- Less driving: replace Merzouga with the Zagora desert in two days and add a day in the Ourika valley or Imlil.
- More coast: spend two nights in Essaouira, then continue to Taghazout — read Essaouira, Agadir or Taghazout?.
- More culture: see our imperial cities tour.
- With young children: keep driving days under five hours and add pool afternoons.
Best time for this itinerary
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal. In summer, the desert is very hot — plan early starts. In winter, desert nights are cold and the Tichka pass may occasionally close after snow. See the best time to visit.
In short
Seven days is enough to fall in love with Morocco: the medina, the mountains, the kasbahs, the dunes and the ocean. With a private driver, each day flows into the next without stress. Send us your dates and group size, and we will tailor this itinerary to you.
