Essaouira, Agadir or Taghazout? Choosing Your Atlantic Escape from Marrakech
Three very different coastal towns within three hours of Marrakech: windswept, artistic Essaouira, sunny family-friendly Agadir and laid-back surf village Taghazout. Which one suits you — and how to combine them?
After the energy of Marrakech, many travellers want a few days by the ocean. Three towns on the Atlantic are within about three hours’ drive: Essaouira, Agadir and Taghazout. They are often mentioned together, but they could hardly be more different. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose — or combine them.
Essaouira: the artistic, windswept port
Essaouira is a whitewashed fortified town with blue shutters, ramparts facing the ocean, a lively fishing port and a medina classified by UNESCO. Its pace is gentle, its streets are easy to walk, and its galleries, music and seafood give it a unique atmosphere.
- The beach: long and wide, but the town is famous for its strong trade winds, especially in spring and summer. Great for kitesurfing and windsurfing, less for lying on the sand all day.
- Best for: culture lovers, couples, photographers, wind sports.
- Distance from Marrakech: about 190 km, around 2 h 45.
- Feeling: a small, characterful town rather than a beach resort.
Essaouira is also perfect as a day trip from Marrakech — see our Essaouira itinerary and Essaouira day trip.
Agadir: sunshine and an easy family beach
Agadir is a modern city rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake. Its great asset is a long sandy beach in a sheltered bay, with a promenade, restaurants, a marina and many hotels and resorts. The climate is mild all year, with around 300 days of sunshine.
- The beach: wide, calm and well equipped — the easiest for families with children.
- Best for: families, relaxation, all-inclusive stays, winter sun.
- Distance from Marrakech: about 250 km by motorway, around 3 hours.
- Feeling: a comfortable holiday city rather than a historic town.
Agadir has its own international airport, which makes open-jaw trips easy: fly into Marrakech and home from Agadir, or the reverse. Read our Agadir airport arrival guide.
Taghazout: the laid-back surf village
About 20 km north of Agadir, Taghazout is a former fishing village that became one of Africa’s best-known surf destinations. Colourful houses, surf shops, yoga studios and cafés overlook a series of famous breaks. Next to it, the newer Taghazout Bay resort offers upscale hotels and a golf course.
- The beach: several bays and point breaks; good waves especially from autumn to spring.
- Best for: surfers of all levels, yoga retreats, young travellers, digital nomads.
- Distance from Marrakech: around 3 h 15; from Agadir airport, about 50 minutes.
- Feeling: relaxed, sporty and sociable.

Best season
- Spring and autumn are pleasant everywhere.
- Summer: Agadir and Taghazout are warm and sunny; Essaouira stays cooler and windy — a relief from inland heat.
- Winter: Agadir and Taghazout enjoy mild sunshine and the best surf; Essaouira can be cool and grey at times.
Combining two or three towns
You do not have to choose only one. The coastal road between Essaouira and Agadir is one of the most beautiful drives in Morocco, through argan forests and along wild beaches, with a stop at an argan cooperative. Popular combinations:
- Marrakech – Essaouira – Taghazout/Agadir, flying home from Agadir.
- Marrakech – Essaouira day trip, then a few days in Taghazout.
- A loop by van: Marrakech, Essaouira, Agadir and back — see our multi-city itinerary.
Our intercity transfers link all three with stops on request, and surfboards are welcome.
Food and evenings
Each town also has its own table. In Essaouira, the fishing port is the place for grilled sardines and the catch of the day at simple stalls, and the medina is full of small restaurants and live music in the evening. Agadir offers everything from seafront cafés to international restaurants along the promenade and in the marina, with a quieter nightlife centred on hotels. In Taghazout, evenings are simple and sociable: fresh juices, healthy bowls, fish tagines and sunset sessions on rooftop terraces above the waves.
Getting around once there
Essaouira’s medina is pedestrian and best explored on foot; cars stop at the gates, where porters help with luggage. Agadir is spread along the bay, with petit taxis for short trips and a long promenade for walking. Taghazout is small enough to cross on foot, but the surf spots along the coast are easier to reach with a driver. For day trips from any of them — to Paradise Valley, the souks of Inezgane or back to Marrakech — a private van keeps things simple.
