Best Time to Visit Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains (Season by Season)
Weather, crowds, festivals and the best day trips for every season: a month-by-month guide to choosing when to visit Marrakech and the Atlas.

Marrakech is a year-round destination, but the experience changes a lot with the seasons. The same day trip can be perfect in April and exhausting in August; the Atlas can be green and flowery or covered in snow. This guide helps you choose the right time for your trip — and the best excursions for each season.
The short answer
- Best overall: March to May and late September to November.
- Best for budget and fewer crowds: January, February and early December (outside holidays).
- Best for the beach and Essaouira: June to September.
- Hottest: July and August — still very doable with the right planning.
Spring (March – May): the favourite season
Spring is Marrakech at its best. Daytime temperatures range from 22 to 30 °C, evenings are mild, and the countryside is green after the winter rains. The Atlas peaks are still capped with snow, creating spectacular views from the city's rooftops.
Best trips: all of them. The Ourika Valley is lush, the Ouzoud waterfalls are at full flow, and the roads to Aït Ben Haddou and the Sahara are pleasant. In May, the Rose Festival is held in Kelaat M'Gouna.
Keep in mind: this is high season. Easter holidays bring crowds and higher hotel prices, so book accommodation and transport early.
Summer (June – August): hot but magical
Summer in Marrakech is hot: 35 to 40 °C is common, sometimes more. But the air is dry, the evenings are lovely, and many riads have plunge pools. The trick is to adapt your rhythm: explore early in the morning, rest in the afternoon, and go out again after sunset.
Best trips: head for the cool. Imlil and the High Atlas are 10 °C cooler; Ourika's riverside terraces are refreshing; Essaouira is breezy and often 15 °C cooler than Marrakech. Agafay is best at sunset and in the evening.
Avoid: long midday drives to the desert; Merzouga can reach 45 °C. Book a vehicle with powerful air conditioning — all of ours have it.
Autumn (September – November): golden and calm
Autumn is another excellent season. September is still hot, but October and November bring 25 °C days, clear skies and golden light. The summer crowds have gone, and the walnut trees of the Atlas turn yellow.
Best trips: the Sahara tour to Merzouga is ideal, as are Aït Ben Haddou, Imlil walks and the Agafay desert. Golf season begins.
Keep in mind: in late September and October, short but violent storms can occasionally hit the mountains. Rivers like the Ourika can rise quickly; always follow local advice.
Winter (December – February): sunny days, cold nights
Winter in Marrakech is often surprising: sunny days around 18–20 °C, but cold nights that can approach freezing. Riads can be chilly — choose one with heating. The Atlas is covered in snow, and the Oukaïmeden ski station sometimes opens.
Best trips: the snowy Atlas is beautiful from Imlil or the Tichka pass (dress warmly); desert days are pleasant, though nights in camps are very cold. Christmas and New Year are very busy — book well in advance.
Keep in mind: heavy snow can occasionally close the Tichka pass for a few hours. We monitor road conditions and adapt itineraries.
Ramadan
The dates of Ramadan move about 11 days earlier each year. During Ramadan, many Moroccans fast from dawn to sunset. Tourist sites, hotels and restaurants catering to visitors remain open, and transport works normally. Afternoons can be quieter and evenings more festive. It's a fascinating time to visit, with a few simple courtesies: avoid eating or drinking ostentatiously in public during the day, especially in rural areas.
Festivals and events
- Marrakech Marathon — January
- Rose Festival, Kelaat M'Gouna — May
- Gnaoua World Music Festival, Essaouira — June
- Marrakech Popular Arts Festival — summer
- Marrakech International Film Festival — late autumn
During festivals, transport and accommodation fill up quickly. Book early.
