Morocco’s Imperial Cities by Private Van: Rabat, Meknes, Fes and Marrakech

Morocco has had several capitals over its long history, and four of them are known as the imperial cities: Rabat, Meknes, Fes and Marrakech. Each was shaped by a different dynasty, and together they tell the story of the country — from medieval scholars and Andalusian refugees to sultans who built walls dozens of kilometres long. Travelling between them with your own van and driver turns a complex itinerary into a comfortable journey.

The route at a glance

A classic loop starts at Casablanca airport or Marrakech, travels north along the Atlantic to Rabat, inland to Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis, then to Fes, before returning south to Marrakech — either through the Middle Atlas or via the desert. Main driving times:

  • Marrakech → Casablanca: about 2h45
  • Casablanca → Rabat: about 1h15
  • Rabat → Meknes: about 2h
  • Meknes → Fes: about 1h
  • Fes → Marrakech: 6 to 8 hours depending on the route

A 7-day itinerary

Day 1 — Arrival in Casablanca, visit and drive to Rabat. Visit the Hassan II Mosque, then drive to Rabat for the evening. Read our Casablanca layover guide for tips on the mosque.

Day 2 — Rabat. The capital is elegant, green and relaxed. See the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the blue-and-white alleys of the Kasbah of the Udayas above the river mouth, and the ruins of Chellah. Rabat's medina is calm and pleasant for shopping.

Day 3 — Rabat → Meknes → Volubilis. Drive inland to Meknes, the city of Sultan Moulay Ismail, with its monumental gate Bab Mansour, granaries and royal stables. In the afternoon, visit Volubilis, a UNESCO-listed Roman city with remarkable mosaics, and the holy town of Moulay Idriss perched on a hill nearby.

Day 4 — Fes. Fes el-Bali, founded in the 9th century, is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world. With a licensed local guide, explore the Al Quaraouiyine complex, the Bou Inania and Attarine madrasas, the Chouara tanneries and countless workshops. Your driver drops you at a gate and picks you up later.

Day 5 — Fes. A second day to explore the Royal Palace gates, the Mellah, the Merinid tombs viewpoint at sunset and, if you wish, a cooking class or a hammam.

Day 6 — Fes → Middle Atlas → Beni Mellal. Cross the cedar forests of Azrou, home to Barbary macaques, and stop in Ifrane, the alpine-style town often called the "Switzerland of Morocco". Spend the night around Beni Mellal or continue to Marrakech if you prefer a long day.

Day 7 — Arrival in Marrakech. Enjoy the afternoon in the Red City — and plenty more days if your schedule allows.

Why travel with your own van and driver?

Trains connect Casablanca, Rabat, Meknes and Fes efficiently, but there's no direct rail line from Fes to Marrakech that avoids a long detour, Volubilis isn't served by train, and stations are rarely close to medina hotels. With a private van:

  • door-to-door service between riads and hotels,
  • stops anywhere: Volubilis, Moulay Idriss, Ifrane, viewpoints,
  • one driver who knows your plans and your luggage,
  • comfort for families, seniors and groups.

Our van hire with driver is priced per vehicle per day, including fuel, tolls and the driver's food and lodging.

Guides in the cities

Your driver is your companion on the road, but inside medinas and monuments, licensed local guides bring the history to life — essential in the maze of Fes. We can arrange guides in each city for half or full days. Learn more in private tour vs group tour.

Best season

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal. Summer is hot inland, especially in Fes and Meknes; winter is mild on the coast and cold in the Middle Atlas, where snow can fall around Ifrane.

What to pack

  • Comfortable walking shoes for cobbled medinas.
  • Modest clothing for religious sites.
  • Layers for the Middle Atlas.
  • Small notes for guides, entries and tips.

Four imperial cities, one comfortable van and a driver who knows every road: it's the most elegant way to understand Morocco. Send us your dates and group size for a tailored itinerary.
