The real High Atlas, in a single day
Imlil is the gateway to Toubkal National Park and the starting point for climbers heading to Jebel Toubkal, North Africa's highest summit. You don't need to climb it to feel the magic: in one private day from Marrakech you can walk between walnut orchards, Berber villages and mountain streams, with snowy peaks above you for half the year.
The route
We leave Marrakech in the morning and drive south past the Kik plateau and the turquoise Lalla Takerkoust lake viewpoint (optional detour). After Asni — whose weekly souk on Saturday is one of the most authentic in the region — the road climbs through the Moulay Brahim gorges to Imlil at 1,740 m.
What to do in Imlil
- Short walk to Aroumd — 1h30 return, panoramic views over the valley.
- Tamatert loop — gentle walk with views of the Kasbah du Toubkal.
- Mule ride — for children or anyone who prefers not to walk uphill.
- Lunch in a guesthouse — tagine, salads and fresh bread on a terrace facing the peaks.
Your driver can arrange a certified local mountain guide for the walk. You pay the guide directly; it supports the village economy.
Best season
From March to June and September to November the weather is perfect for walking. In winter the landscape is spectacular but bring warm clothes — it can snow in Imlil. Learn more in our Imlil and Toubkal day trip article and our seasonal guide.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be fit for the Imlil day trip?
No. Walks are adapted to your level, and mules are available. Even without walking, the drive and views are worth it.
Can we climb Toubkal in one day?
Not realistically — the ascent normally takes two days with a night at the refuge. We can drive you to Imlil and pick you up afterwards.
Is it cold in Imlil?
It is usually 8–12 °C cooler than Marrakech. Bring a fleece, even in spring.
