The great Sahara road trip
Seeing the sun rise over the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi is one of the most memorable experiences in Morocco. Merzouga is 560 km from Marrakech, so the journey is part of the adventure — and doing it with your own private van and driver means you travel at your own pace, stop where you like and skip the crowded 16-seat group tours.
Suggested 3-day itinerary
Day 1 — Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Gorges. Cross the High Atlas, explore the UNESCO-listed ksar, then follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through Skoura's palm grove to the Dades valley for the night.
Day 2 — Dades → Todra Gorges → Merzouga. Walk between the 300-metre walls of the Todra gorge, continue via Erfoud and reach Merzouga in the afternoon. A camel caravan takes you into the dunes for sunset and a night in a desert camp with dinner and Berber drums.
Day 3 — Merzouga → Marrakech. Sunrise over the dunes, breakfast, and the long, scenic drive back to Marrakech via Alnif and Ouarzazate. Or end your trip in Fes instead.
