Marrakech in One Day with a Private Driver: Gardens, Palaces and Viewpoints
A complete one-day itinerary to discover Marrakech comfortably: Majorelle, the Medina’s palaces, the Menara and Agdal gardens, the Palmeraie and a sunset over the Atlas.
Marrakech is often described as a city for walking, and the Medina is indeed best explored on foot. But the city is also much bigger than its old walls: gardens, palm groves and viewpoints are spread across several kilometres, and summer temperatures can make long walks exhausting. A day with a private driver combines both — walking where it's magical, driving where it's practical. Here's our favourite one-day itinerary.
08:30 — Jardin Majorelle, before the crowds
Start at the Jardin Majorelle, the cobalt-blue garden created by painter Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé. Arrive at opening time: by late morning the paths are crowded. Allow an hour, and add the Yves Saint Laurent Museum next door if you love fashion and design. Book tickets online in advance in high season.
10:15 — The Koutoubia and its gardens
Your driver takes you to the foot of the Koutoubia Mosque, the 12th-century minaret that dominates the city's skyline. The mosque is closed to non-Muslims, but the gardens around it are a lovely place for photos and a short walk.
10:45 — Into the Medina: palaces and the Mellah
From the Koutoubia, the driver drops you near the Kasbah quarter. On foot, visit:
- The Saadian Tombs, richly decorated 16th-century mausoleums.
- The Bahia Palace, a 19th-century palace with painted cedar ceilings, zellige tiles and peaceful courtyards.
- The Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, with its spice market and covered souk.
A licensed local guide can join you for this part of the day — highly recommended for understanding the history. By law, only licensed guides may guide inside monuments; your driver can help arrange one. Read more in private tour vs group tour.
13:00 — Lunch with a view
Escape the midday heat with lunch on a rooftop terrace overlooking the Medina, or let your driver take you to a garden restaurant outside the walls. Afterwards, a mint tea and a short rest in the air-conditioned van are welcome.
14:30 — The souks and Ben Youssef
Walk through the souks north of Jemaa el-Fna — dyers', metalworkers' and leather markets — to the Ben Youssef Madrasa, one of the most beautiful Islamic buildings in North Africa. Your driver waits at the nearest access point, keeping any purchases safely in the vehicle.
16:00 — Menara and Agdal gardens
Back in the van, drive to the Menara gardens, with their famous pavilion reflected in a large basin and the Atlas mountains on the horizon on clear days. If you have time, the vast Agdal gardens — olive and orange groves dating back to the 12th century — are open on certain days; your driver will know.
17:00 — The Palmeraie
Head north to the Palmeraie, a huge palm grove dotted with villas and resorts. It's the perfect place for a camel ride at golden hour, or a quad tour if you prefer adrenaline. Children love it.
Sunset — Choose your spot
End the day with the sunset from a rooftop café over Jemaa el-Fna, watching the square come alive — or, if you prefer silence, from a hotel terrace in the Palmeraie. Your driver then brings you back to your riad or hotel, or to a restaurant for dinner.
Why a driver for a city day?
- No taxi negotiations — up to ten different taxis would be needed for this itinerary.
- Air-conditioned breaks between visits, essential in summer.
- Your shopping stays in the car instead of in your arms.
- Perfect for families and seniors, who can't walk long distances in the heat.
- Flexibility: skip a monument, add a hammam, stay longer at Majorelle.
Our private driver in Marrakech service is available by the half day (4 hours) or full day (8 hours). For travellers with reduced mobility, read our guide to accessible travel in Morocco.
Add a hammam break
A traditional hammam is the perfect way to recover from a day of sightseeing. Between the souks and the gardens, your driver can drop you at a spa or a local hammam for an hour of steam, black soap and a scrub, then pick you up for the sunset. Book the hammam in advance in high season, and bring a change of clothes.
Variations
- Half-day option: Majorelle, Koutoubia, Bahia Palace and the Menara gardens in four hours.
- Art & design day: Majorelle and the YSL Museum, the Museum of Photography, galleries in Gueliz and the design shops of Sidi Ghanem.
- City and desert: a morning in the city, then sunset in the Agafay desert, 45 minutes away.
Practical tips
- Wear comfortable shoes — Medina streets are uneven.
- Carry small notes for entry tickets, guides and tips.
- Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) out of respect.
- Drink plenty of water; there's always some in the van.
Marrakech is best discovered at your own rhythm. Combine walking and driving, and you'll see more while feeling less tired. Book your private driver and enjoy the Red City in comfort.
