Driving Distances and Times Between Moroccan Cities: The Complete Table

“How long does it take to get there?” is the question behind almost every Moroccan itinerary. Maps often underestimate journey times, especially in the mountains, and a route that looks short can take hours. This page gathers realistic distances and driving times for the routes travellers ask about most, based on our drivers’ daily experience.

All times are approximate, at a comfortable pace in normal traffic, without stops. Add 15–20 minutes for every two hours of driving, plus time for visits and meals.

From Marrakech: day-trip distances

Our day trips use exactly these timings.

Why mountain roads take longer

The Tizi n’Tichka road between Marrakech and Ouarzazate climbs to 2,260 m with many bends; average speeds are much lower than on motorways, and trucks or roadworks can slow you down. The same goes for the Dades gorges, the Tizi n’Test and the Rif around Chefchaouen. In winter, snow can occasionally close the high passes for a few hours or a day. Plan your long days with margin.

Motorways and tolls

Morocco has a good motorway network linking Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, Meknes, Tangier and Agadir. Tolls apply; with our services, fuel and tolls are included in the price. Motorway service areas offer cafés, toilets and prayer rooms — comfortable places for a break.

How long should a driving day be?

From experience:

  • Up to 4 hours: comfortable, leaves time for visits.
  • 5–7 hours: acceptable with good stops and interesting scenery, as on the desert road.
  • More than 7 hours: best avoided, especially with children — split the journey with an overnight stop.

That is why a trip to Merzouga is usually done in three days: see our Merzouga itinerary. For a full week, read our 7-day itinerary.

Planning tips

  • Leave early on long days: light is better, roads are calmer and arrival is before dark.
  • Avoid mountain roads at night when possible.
  • Keep water, snacks and motion sickness tablets in the vehicle — see comfort tips for long drives.
  • Use these times to choose your base: Marrakech for the Atlas and Essaouira, Agadir for the south coast, Ouarzazate for the kasbahs and gorges.

Train or plane for the longest distances?

For a few routes, other options deserve a mention. Trains link Marrakech with Casablanca, Rabat, Fes and Tangier, and the high-speed line makes Casablanca – Tangier very fast. Domestic flights connect some cities, but with check-in and transfers they rarely save time under 500 km. For Merzouga, Ouarzazate, Essaouira, Imlil or any route with stops along the way, the road remains the only practical choice — and the landscapes are a big part of the experience.

Sample routes with good breaks

  • Marrakech – Merzouga: break in Aït Ben Haddou, then sleep in the Dades valley before continuing via the Todra gorge.
  • Marrakech – Fes: lunch in Rabat or a detour via Meknes and Volubilis, or the mountain route via Beni Mellal and Ifrane.
  • Marrakech – Agadir: a coffee stop at the motorway service area at the halfway point, or a coastal detour via Essaouira.
  • Fes – Marrakech via the desert: two or three days via Ifrane, Midelt, Merzouga and the gorges.

Private driver or self-drive?

These distances are manageable by car, but driving in Morocco requires attention: mountain bends, pedestrians, livestock and different habits. With a private driver, you rest, look at the landscape and stop wherever you like. Compare both in private driver or rental car?, or book intercity transfers and van hire with driver.

In short

Bookmark this table when planning your trip, add time for stops, and remember that in the mountains, kilometres count double. Send us your route, and we will check the timing and suggest the best places to break the journey.
