Imlil and Toubkal National Park: A Private Day in the High Atlas

On a clear day from Marrakech's rooftops, you can see the snowy wall of the High Atlas on the horizon. Imlil is where that wall becomes real: a mountain village at 1,740 m, surrounded by walnut orchards and terraced fields, with the summit of Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m) just out of sight above the valley. It's the gateway to Toubkal National Park and one of the most rewarding day trips from Marrakech.

The drive: Marrakech to Imlil

The journey takes about 1h30 and is part of the experience.

  1. The Haouz plain — leaving Marrakech southwards on the R203, olive groves and small farms stretch towards the mountains.
  2. Tahanaout — a market town where the road starts climbing.
  3. Moulay Brahim gorges — the road winds through a dramatic red-rock gorge, with views down to the river.
  4. Asni — a large village famous for its Saturday souk, one of the most authentic in the region. If you travel on a Saturday, it's worth a stop.
  5. The final climb — from Asni, a narrow road follows the Rheraya valley up to Imlil, between villages built from the same red earth as the mountains.

With a private driver, you can stop for photos at the viewpoints, or detour to Lalla Takerkoust lake and the Kik plateau on the way back.

What to do in Imlil

Imlil is above all a place to walk. Our favourite options for a day trip:

  • Aroumd (about 1h30 return) — a gentle climb to a village perched on a rocky spur at 1,900 m, with a magnificent view over the valley and the peaks. The classic choice.
  • Tamatert loop (about 2 hours) — a pleasant walk to the village of Tamatert, with views over Imlil and the Kasbah du Toubkal, one of the most beautiful mountain lodges in Morocco.
  • Sidi Chamharouch (4–5 hours return) — for fit walkers, the path to Toubkal leads to this pilgrimage site with a giant white-painted rock. A long but spectacular hike.
  • Mule ride — a great option for children or anyone who prefers not to climb on foot.

Should you hire a guide?

For walks beyond the village, we recommend a certified local mountain guide. Paths can be confusing between villages, the weather changes quickly, and a guide brings the place to life: Berber culture, agriculture, wildlife and local stories. Since 2019, a guide is also compulsory for anyone heading into the high mountains towards Toubkal. Your driver can arrange a reliable guide; you pay him directly, and the money stays in the valley.

Lunch in the mountains

Lunch is usually taken in a guesthouse (gîte) or a terrace restaurant in Imlil or Aroumd: tagine, couscous on Fridays, Berber omelette, salads and fresh bread, followed by mint tea with a view of the peaks. Some walks include lunch at a local family's home — a memorable experience.

Weather and seasons

  • Spring (March–June): the best season — green terraces, blossoming trees, snow on the peaks.
  • Summer (July–August): warm during the day but cool at night; a perfect escape from the heat of Marrakech.
  • Autumn (September–November): stable weather, golden walnut trees, ideal for walking.
  • Winter (December–February): often snowy and cold. The road is usually open but can be closed briefly after heavy snowfall. Bring warm layers.

Imlil is generally 8–12 °C cooler than Marrakech. For more detail, read our best time to visit Marrakech and the Atlas.

What to bring

  • Walking shoes or trainers with good grip
  • Layers: a fleece and a light waterproof jacket
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen (the sun is strong at altitude)
  • Water and a few snacks
  • Cash in dirhams for the guide, lunch and tips

Can I climb Toubkal in a day?

Realistically, no. The standard ascent takes two days, with a night at the Toubkal refuge (3,207 m) and an early-morning summit push. Some very fit trail runners attempt it in a day, but it's not recommended. If you plan to climb, we can drive you to Imlil on day one and pick you up after your descent.

Imlil or Ourika?

If you want easy waterfalls, riverside lunches and a lively atmosphere, choose the Ourika Valley. If you want quieter mountain landscapes, better walking and close-up views of the High Atlas, choose Imlil. Both are wonderful — and both are about an hour from your riad.
