Essaouira Day Trip from Marrakech: Itinerary, Stops and Argan Cooperatives
An hour-by-hour itinerary for the perfect Essaouira day trip from Marrakech: argan goats, the fishing port, the Skala ramparts, the Medina, lunch and the beach.

After a few days in Marrakech's busy souks and hot streets, Essaouira feels like a deep breath of sea air. The old port city on the Atlantic coast is calmer, cooler and painted in white and blue. Its fortified Medina, designed in the 18th century, is listed by UNESCO, and its harbour is one of the most photogenic places in Morocco. Here's our hour-by-hour plan for a perfect private day trip.
How far is Essaouira from Marrakech?
Essaouira lies about 190 km west of Marrakech, a drive of roughly 2h45. The road crosses farmland and then the argan forest that covers the hinterland of Essaouira — the only region in the world where the argan tree grows naturally. A day trip gives you about six hours in Essaouira, enough to see the highlights at a relaxed pace.
08:00 — Departure from Marrakech
Your driver picks you up at your hotel or at the nearest gate to your riad. Mornings are the best time to leave: the light is soft, the roads are quiet, and you'll reach the coast before lunch.
09:30 — Argan country and the famous goats
Around the town of Chichaoua and especially after Sidi Mokhtar, argan trees start to dominate the landscape. Between June and October, when the fruit is ripe, you may see the extraordinary goats in the trees, balancing on branches to eat the fruit. (Note: some herders place goats in roadside trees for photos and expect a tip; your driver can tell you which stops are genuine.)
10:15 — Women's argan cooperative
Stop at a women's cooperative to see how argan oil is made: the fruit is dried, the nuts are cracked by hand between two stones, and the kernels are roasted (for culinary oil) or left raw (for cosmetic oil) before being ground. Cooperatives provide fair income to local women, and you can buy oil, amlou and cosmetics at good prices.
11:00 — Arrival in Essaouira and the harbour
Start at the fishing port, the heart of the city. In the morning, fishermen bring in sardines, sea bream and octopus, mend their nets and repaint the famous blue boats. Seagulls circle overhead and the smell of the sea is everywhere. Walk to the Skala du Port, the old harbour fortress, for a view over the boats and the Medina walls.
12:00 — The Medina and Skala de la Ville
Enter the Medina through Bab el-Marsa and walk along the main avenue to the Skala de la Ville, the long sea-facing rampart lined with bronze cannons. This is one of the filming locations of Game of Thrones, and the views over the crashing waves are superb. Beneath the ramparts, small workshops sell objects carved from thuya wood, a fragrant local wood.
13:00 — Lunch: seafood by the port
For a memorable lunch, head to the grill stalls by the port: choose your fish and seafood from the display, agree on the price, and it's grilled in front of you. Alternatively, many Medina restaurants and rooftop terraces serve tagines, fish pastilla and fresh salads with ocean views.
14:30 — Souks, galleries and the Mellah
Essaouira's souks are far calmer than Marrakech's. Browse spices, jewellery, rugs, leather and paintings; Essaouira has a strong artistic tradition, and many galleries display local painters. Explore the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, which reflects the city's long multicultural history.
15:30 — The beach
South of the Medina, a wide sandy beach curves around the bay. It's often windy — perfect for kitesurfers and windsurfers — but lovely for a walk. You can take a short camel or horse ride along the sand towards the ruins of the Borj El Berod fort.
16:30 — Departure
Time for a final coffee or mint tea before heading back. You'll arrive in Marrakech around 19:30, in time for dinner.
Tips for your day
- Bring a jacket: Essaouira is often 10 °C cooler than Marrakech and windy.
- Cash: many small shops and the port grills only take cash.
- Photography: the harbour is best in the morning light; the ramparts at golden hour.
- Be respectful: ask permission before photographing fishermen or locals.
- Stay longer: if you can, spend a night. Essaouira is magical in the evening, and you'll avoid the long drive back. We offer one-way transfers.
Should you take the bus?
Buses connect Marrakech and Essaouira several times a day and are affordable. But you'll spend extra time getting to and from bus stations, you can't stop at the argan cooperative or the goat trees, and the return schedule may not match your plans. For couples, families and groups, a private Essaouira day trip is the most comfortable and flexible option — and the price is per vehicle.
When to go
Essaouira is pleasant all year. Summer is ideal for escaping Marrakech's heat; spring and autumn offer soft light and few crowds; in June, the Gnaoua World Music Festival turns the city into an open-air concert. Winter days are mild and often sunny.
