Zagora Desert in 2 Days: The Shorter Sahara Option from Marrakech

Many travellers dream of a night in the Sahara, but not everyone has three days to reach the great dunes of Merzouga. If your time is limited, Zagora offers an alternative: a two-day private trip from Marrakech that crosses the High Atlas, follows the spectacular palm groves of the Draa Valley and ends with a camel ride and a night under the stars in a desert camp. Here's what to expect — including an honest comparison with Merzouga.

Zagora or Merzouga?

Let's be clear from the start, because it's the most common question:

  • Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) has the iconic, towering golden dunes you see in photos. It's about 560 km from Marrakech and needs at least three days to enjoy without exhaustion.
  • Zagora is about 360 km from Marrakech, around 7 hours with stops. The dunes near Zagora are smaller and more scattered; the most beautiful ones lie a little further south, around Tinfou and M'Hamid.
  • The Draa Valley, however, is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Morocco: dozens of kilometres of palm groves, kasbahs and ksour along the river.

In short: if the giant dunes are your priority, choose our 3-day Merzouga tour. If you have two days and want the experience of a desert night with superb landscapes along the way, Zagora is an excellent choice.

Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Draa Valley → Zagora

Morning. Leave Marrakech around 07:30 and cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m). Stop for photos and a mint tea at the top.

Late morning. Visit Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar, or keep it short if you have already seen it. Our guide to Aït Ben Haddou via the Tichka has all the details.

Afternoon. After Ouarzazate, the road climbs over the Tizi n'Tinififft pass and descends towards Agdz, where the Draa Valley begins. For the next 90 km, the road follows a green ribbon of palm trees between bare mountains — stop at viewpoints and perhaps visit a kasbah in Tamnougalt.

Sunset. Reach the desert near Zagora, mount your camel and ride into the dunes for sunset. Dinner is served in the camp, followed by music around the fire and a night of extraordinary silence and stars.

Day 2: Zagora → Tamegroute (optional) → Marrakech

Sunrise. Wake early for the sunrise over the dunes, then enjoy breakfast in the camp.

Optional: Tamegroute. About 20 km south of Zagora, the village of Tamegroute is known for its green-glazed pottery and its historic Koranic library. A short visit is worthwhile if time allows.

The return. Drive back north through the Draa Valley and Ouarzazate, cross the Tichka and arrive in Marrakech in the evening. It's a long day of driving (about 7 hours plus stops), which is why comfort and an experienced driver matter.

Choosing your camp

Desert camps around Zagora range from simple Berber tents with shared facilities to comfortable private tents with en-suite bathrooms. Tell us your preferences and budget; we can recommend reliable camps and coordinate timing with them, or simply drive you to the camp you've booked.

Is two days too much driving?

It's honest to say that a two-day desert trip involves a lot of time in the vehicle — roughly 14 hours over two days. It's very feasible with a spacious, air-conditioned van, regular stops and a calm driver, but it isn't relaxing for everyone. Our suggestions:

  • If you can, add a third day and sleep in the Dades Valley or Skoura on the way back — see Skoura and the Dades Valley in two days.
  • If you want a desert evening without the long drive, the Agafay desert is only 45 minutes from Marrakech.
  • Travelling with young children? Agafay is usually the better option.

Best time to go

  • October to April: the most comfortable months, with warm days and cool nights.
  • Winter: sunny days but very cold desert nights; bring warm layers.
  • Summer: very hot in the Draa Valley; start early and expect a short camel ride at sunset only.

Read our seasonal guide for more detail.

What's included

The private trip includes the vehicle, the driver, fuel and the driver's food and lodging. The camp (dinner, night and breakfast), the camel ride and any entrance fees are added according to your choices — we show every cost transparently before you book. Compare options with our Aït Ben Haddou day trip.

What to pack

  • A warm jacket and layers for the night.
  • A scarf or cheche for sun and wind.
  • Comfortable shoes and sandals for the dunes.
  • A small overnight bag (big luggage stays in the vehicle).
  • A headlamp or phone torch and a power bank.

Two days won't show you all of the Sahara, but a night in the dunes after a day along the Draa is an experience you'll never forget. Ask us for a Zagora quote or compare with the 3-day Merzouga planning guide.
