Quad and Buggy Tours Around Marrakech: Agafay and Palmeraie Guide
Agafay or the Palmeraie? Quad or buggy? How long, what age, what to wear and how to choose a safe operator — everything you need to know before a quad ride near Marrakech.
Riding a quad bike across the hills of the Agafay desert or through the palm trees of the Palmeraie is one of the most popular activities around Marrakech. It is fun, accessible to beginners and a great way to see landscapes that are hard to reach otherwise. Here is a clear guide to choosing where to go, what to expect and how to stay safe.
Agafay or the Palmeraie?
The Palmeraie is a large palm grove on the northern edge of Marrakech, 20 to 30 minutes from the medina. Tracks wind between palm trees, small villages and dry riverbeds. It is the quickest option, ideal for a half-day or for families with limited time.
The Agafay desert, about 45 minutes south-west of Marrakech, offers a wilder landscape: rolling stony hills, ochre plateaus and wide views of the High Atlas, often snow-capped in winter. Tracks are more varied, with climbs and descents that make the ride more exciting. Sunset sessions here are spectacular — and easily combined with dinner in a desert camp. Read our Agafay guide.
Quick summary:
- Short on time, with children: Palmeraie.
- Best scenery and sunset: Agafay.
- Real sand dunes: neither — for dunes, you need the Sahara at Merzouga.
Quad or buggy?
- Quads (ATVs) are four-wheeled motorbikes, driven alone or with a passenger behind. Easy to learn in a few minutes, they are the most common choice.
- Buggies (side-by-side vehicles) have a steering wheel, seats side by side and a roll cage. They feel more like driving a small off-road car, with two to four people inside. Operators usually ask the driver to hold a car driving licence.
Couples often choose a buggy to ride together; groups of friends and teenagers usually prefer quads.
How long does it last?
Most sessions last one to two hours of riding, plus a briefing and equipment time. Half-day programmes may include a tea stop in a Berber house, a camel ride or lunch. Add the transfer time from your hotel: about 30 minutes for the Palmeraie and 45 minutes for Agafay each way.
Age and experience
No experience is needed: instructors explain the controls and you start slowly on easy tracks. Minimum ages vary by operator, but driving a quad alone is usually allowed from around 16 years old, while younger children can often ride as passengers or on smaller quads in some places. Always check with the operator, and be honest about your experience — guides adapt the pace to the group.
Safety first: choosing a good operator
A good quad experience depends on a serious operator. Before you book, check that:
- helmets are provided and worn by everyone, with goggles or a visor;
- the vehicles look well maintained, with working brakes and lights;
- a briefing and a short practice session happen before leaving;
- guides ride with the group, at the front and the back;
- the operator has insurance covering participants.
Ride at the pace of the guide, keep a safe distance from the quad in front — dust reduces visibility — and never ride after drinking alcohol. If something feels unsafe, say so.
What to wear
- Long trousers and closed shoes — no sandals.
- A scarf or a chèche to cover your face from dust; many operators lend one.
- Sunglasses if no goggles are provided, and sunscreen.
- A warm layer for sunset sessions: temperatures drop quickly in Agafay after dark.
- Clothes that can get dusty — they will.
The best time of day
- Morning: cooler and calmer, ideal in summer.
- Sunset: the most beautiful light in Agafay, golden hills and pink Atlas peaks.
- Midday in summer: best avoided; the heat on stony ground is intense.
In winter, any time of day is pleasant, though evenings are cold.
Combining it with other activities
A quad session fits easily into a day or evening:
- Agafay evening: quad at sunset, then dinner and music in a desert camp — see our Agafay desert trip.
- Palmeraie half-day: quad in the morning, lunch and a spa afternoon.
- Adventure day: quad in Agafay, lunch at Lalla Takerkoust lake, swimming in summer.
- Camel and quad combo: compare options in our camel ride guide.
Getting there
Many quad operators include a basic pick-up, but schedules are shared and you may wait for other passengers. A private driver gives you flexibility: leave when you want, combine several activities in one day, and travel in a clean, air-conditioned vehicle — very welcome after a dusty ride. Our vans carry up to 8 people and our VIP minibus up to 17, perfect for groups of friends, bachelor parties and families.
In short
Choose the Palmeraie for convenience and Agafay for scenery and sunsets, quads for fun and buggies to ride together. Wear long clothes, accept the dust, insist on helmets — and enjoy one of the most exhilarating ways to discover the landscapes around Marrakech. Tell us your plans and we will organise the transfers around your session.
