The 10 Best Day Trips from Marrakech by Private Driver

Marrakech is magical, but one of its greatest assets is what lies around it. Within a few hours' drive you'll find snow-capped mountains, roaring waterfalls, a stony desert, palm-filled oases and a windswept Atlantic port. Doing these trips with a private driver means leaving when you want, stopping where you like and avoiding the rhythm of crowded group buses. Here are our ten favourite day trips from the Red City.

1. Ourika Valley — the green escape (1 hour)

The closest mountain valley to Marrakech, Ourika follows a river into the High Atlas between walnut trees, Berber villages and riverside restaurants. At the end of the road, Setti Fatma's seven waterfalls invite you to scramble up the rocks. Ideal for a relaxed day or for families. Read our Ourika Valley guide or book the Ourika day trip.

Best for: families, first-timers, hot summer days.

2. Imlil and Toubkal National Park (1h30)

Imlil sits at 1,740 m at the foot of Jebel Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. Walk to the village of Aroumd, have lunch on a terrace facing the summits and breathe the mountain air. It's the most authentic High Atlas experience you can have in a day. More in our Imlil and Toubkal article.

Best for: walkers, photographers, nature lovers.

3. Agafay Desert (45 minutes)

No time for the Sahara? The Agafay desert is a lunar landscape of golden hills just 45 minutes from Marrakech. Ride a camel or a quad, watch the sunset over the Atlas and dine in a desert camp. Our Agafay desert guide explains every option.

Best for: couples, sunset lovers, short stays.

4. Ouzoud Waterfalls (2h30)

Morocco's highest waterfalls plunge 110 metres into a red gorge, with Barbary macaques playing in the olive trees and colourful boats at the bottom. A full but unforgettable day. See our complete Ouzoud guide.

Best for: families with older children, nature and photography.

5. Essaouira (2h45)

The blue-and-white port on the Atlantic is the perfect contrast to Marrakech: fresh sea breeze, UNESCO-listed ramparts, a fishing harbour and grilled sardines. On the way, look for goats in the argan trees. Plan it with our Essaouira day trip itinerary.

Best for: escaping the heat, seafood lovers, art and music fans.

6. Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate (3h30)

Cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m to reach the fortified ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO site and the backdrop of Gladiator and Game of Thrones. A long day, but one of the most spectacular in Morocco. Details in Aït Ben Haddou via the Tizi n'Tichka.

Best for: road-trip lovers, history and cinema fans.

7. Lalla Takerkoust Lake (40 minutes)

A turquoise reservoir surrounded by red hills and the Atlas. In summer you can swim, kayak or have lunch by the water; it's easy to combine with Agafay for a perfect half day.

Best for: summer afternoons, relaxing lunches.

8. Asni and the Saturday souk (1 hour)

If you're in Marrakech on a Saturday, the weekly souk of Asni is a fascinating glimpse of rural Berber life: livestock, spices, tools, mountains of vegetables and barber stalls. Combine it with Imlil.

Best for: culture, photography, authentic markets.

9. Telouet Kasbah (2h30)

A detour from the Tichka road leads to Telouet, the ruined palace of the Glaoui pashas, once the most powerful family in southern Morocco. Its crumbling exterior hides stunning painted ceilings and zellige tiles. Often combined with Aït Ben Haddou.

Best for: history enthusiasts, off-the-beaten-track travellers.

10. The Palmeraie and Jbilet hills (20–40 minutes)

For a gentle half day, explore the Palmeraie's palm groves by camel or buggy, then head north to the Jbilet hills for wide views and quiet villages. Perfect for your last afternoon.

Best for: half days, arrival or departure days.

Why choose a private driver?

Group tours are cheaper for solo travellers, but they come with compromises: fixed schedules, hotel pick-ups that take an hour, mandatory shopping stops and 16 people sharing one minibus. With a private driver:

  • You set the pace — leave at 7:00 to beat the crowds, or at 10:00 after a long breakfast.
  • You choose the stops — skip the carpet shop, add a viewpoint.
  • The price is per vehicle — for families and groups, it's often close to the cost of group tours.
  • Comfort — air-conditioned vans, space for everyone, child seats on request.

We compare both options honestly in private tour vs group tour from Marrakech.

How to choose

  • Only one day? Ourika or Imlil for mountains, Agafay for desert sunset, Essaouira for the ocean.
  • Travelling with young children? Agafay, Ourika and Lalla Takerkoust involve shorter drives.
  • Love road trips? Aït Ben Haddou or Ouzoud.
  • Want the real Sahara? Consider a 3-day private desert tour to Merzouga.

Check the best time to visit Marrakech and the Atlas, choose your trip, and book your private driver. We'll take care of the rest.
