Skoura Palm Grove and the Dades Valley: A 2-Day Private Trip from Marrakech

The road south of the High Atlas is one of the most beautiful in Morocco, but a single day is too short to enjoy it, and a Sahara tour takes three days or more. For travellers in between, a two-day private trip to Skoura and the Dades Valley is the perfect compromise: the drama of the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, a night in a kasbah among palm trees and the famous hairpin road of the Dades Gorge.

Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Skoura

Morning: crossing the Atlas. Leave Marrakech around 08:00 and climb the N9 towards the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m. Stop for photos and a mint tea at the top, with views over the peaks. Read our detailed guide to Aït Ben Haddou via the Tizi n'Tichka.

Midday: Aït Ben Haddou. Descend to the most famous ksar in Morocco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the set of countless films. Cross the river, climb to the granary at the top and enjoy lunch on a terrace facing the ksar.

Afternoon: Ouarzazate and the road to Skoura. Pass through Ouarzazate — perhaps visiting the Kasbah Taourirt or the film studios — then drive 40 km east to Skoura, an oasis of tens of thousands of palm trees dotted with earthen kasbahs.

Evening: a night in a kasbah. Skoura has some of the most charming accommodation in southern Morocco: restored kasbahs and guesthouses surrounded by palm and olive trees, with pools and roof terraces. Watch the sunset over the palm grove and enjoy a quiet dinner — the silence here is extraordinary.

Day 2: Skoura → Rose Valley → Dades Gorge → Marrakech

Early morning: a walk in the palm grove. With a local guide, walk among palms, irrigation channels (khettaras) and abandoned kasbahs. The most famous, Kasbah Amridil, is open to visitors and offers a fascinating glimpse of traditional architecture.

Morning: the Rose Valley. Continue east to Kelaat M'Gouna, capital of the Moroccan rose. In spring the valley is pink with blossom and the town celebrates its famous Rose Festival; all year round, shops sell rose water and cosmetics.

Late morning: the Dades Gorge. Drive into the Dades Valley, past strange rock formations nicknamed "monkey fingers", to the gorge's most photographed spot: the hairpin road of Tissadrine, zig-zagging up a cliff. Stop at the café at the top for the classic view.

Afternoon: the long drive back. After lunch in the valley, return west via Ouarzazate and the Tichka to arrive in Marrakech in the evening (about 6 hours of driving with stops).

Where to stay in Skoura and the Dades

Skoura is famous for its restored kasbahs and boutique guesthouses hidden in the palm grove, from simple family-run houses to elegant retreats with pools and gardens. If you prefer to sleep closer to the Dades Gorge, several hotels perch on the cliffs with balconies facing the rock formations — dramatic at sunset. Whichever you choose, book ahead in spring and autumn, and tell us the name so your driver can find the entrance: some kasbahs are reached by sandy lanes through the palms.

Why do it in two days?

In a single day, the round trip to the Dades would mean 10 to 12 hours of driving — too much to enjoy the landscapes. Two days allows:

  • a relaxed pace with time to walk, eat and take photos,
  • the magic light of sunset and sunrise in the oasis,
  • a night in a kasbah, one of the best experiences of southern Morocco.

Can I add the Sahara?

Yes. With a third day, continue from the Dades to the Todra Gorge and the dunes of Merzouga for a night in a desert camp — see our 3-day Merzouga private tour and the Merzouga planning guide. For a shorter taste of the desert, the dunes of Zagora are closer: read Zagora in two days.

What's included and what to budget

A two-day private trip includes the vehicle, the driver, fuel and tolls, as well as the driver's meals and accommodation. Your own accommodation in Skoura, meals and entrance fees are added according to your choices — from simple guesthouses to luxury kasbahs. See our Aït Ben Haddou trip and van hire with driver for vehicle options and prices.

Best season

  • Spring: green oases, blooming roses (late April–May), snow on the Atlas.
  • Autumn: golden palm groves and stable weather.
  • Summer: hot in the valleys; start early and enjoy the evenings.
  • Winter: sunny days and cold nights; the Tichka can occasionally close briefly after snow.

What to bring

  • Layers: the pass is cold, the valleys warm.
  • Comfortable shoes for Aït Ben Haddou and the palm grove walk.
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Cash for entrance fees, guides and small purchases.

Two days is enough to fall in love with southern Morocco. Tell us your dates, and we'll suggest the perfect kasbah and timing.
