Marrakech to Merzouga: Planning a Private 3-Day Sahara Tour
How to plan a private desert tour from Marrakech to the Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga: itinerary, camps, budget, seasons and why your own driver changes everything.

For many travellers, the dream of Morocco is a single image: golden dunes glowing at sunset, a camel caravan silhouetted against the sky, a night under a blanket of stars. That image has an address — the Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga, on the edge of the Sahara, about 560 km from Marrakech. Here's how to plan a private three-day journey to get there.
Why a private tour?
Marrakech agencies sell countless shared desert tours. They're inexpensive, but they come with long days in 17-seat minibuses, fixed stops at shops, large camps and little flexibility. A private tour with your own driver and vehicle gives you:
- Your own pace — stop for photos, take a longer lunch, sleep in.
- Your choice of accommodation — from charming kasbahs to luxury desert camps.
- Comfort — a spacious van with room to stretch, not a full minibus.
- A personal relationship with a driver who becomes your guide to the south.
For couples it costs more than a shared tour, but for families and groups the price per person is often surprisingly close. Our Merzouga private desert tour is priced per vehicle.
Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Dades Gorges
About 7 hours of driving with stops. Leave Marrakech in the morning and climb the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m). Descend to Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar, for a visit and lunch. Continue through Ouarzazate and the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing the palm grove of Skoura and the rose valley of Kelaat M'Gouna. Spend the night in a guesthouse or hotel in the Dades Gorges, where the road twists through spectacular rock formations known as the "monkey fingers".

Day 2: Dades → Todra Gorges → Merzouga
About 5 hours of driving. After breakfast, drive to Tinghir and the Todra Gorges, where the river has carved a narrow canyon between walls up to 300 metres high. Walk through the gorge in the cool shade. Continue east via Tinejdad and Erfoud, famous for its fossils, and reach Merzouga in the afternoon.
As the sun lowers, mount your camel for a one to two-hour ride into the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Watch the sunset from the top of a dune, then reach your desert camp: dinner, Berber drums around the fire and a night of extraordinary silence. If you prefer, you can reach the camp by 4x4 and keep the camel ride for sunrise.
Day 3: Merzouga → Marrakech (or Fes)
About 9 to 10 hours of driving. Wake early to watch the sunrise over the dunes — many say it's even more beautiful than sunset. After breakfast, ride back to the village, shower and start the long journey back to Marrakech via Alnif, Nkob and Ouarzazate. The day is long, but the landscapes of the Anti-Atlas are spectacular. Alternatively, end the tour in Fes (about 7 hours via the Ziz valley and the Middle Atlas cedar forests), which is often more practical if you're continuing north.
Should you take more days?
Three days is the minimum. With four or five days, the driving becomes much more comfortable, and you can add:
- a night in a kasbah at Aït Ben Haddou or Skoura,
- a visit to the nomad families and the Khamlia village (Gnaoua music) near Merzouga,
- a second night in the desert,
- the Draa valley and the Zagora route on the way back.
We tailor every itinerary.
Choosing your desert camp
Merzouga camps range widely:
- Standard camps — shared or simple private tents, shared bathrooms, traditional dinner.
- Comfort camps — private tents with en-suite bathrooms and real beds.
- Luxury camps — spacious tents with king-size beds, hot showers, fine dining and sometimes heating.
We can book your camp and hotels for you, showing you each cost transparently, or you can book them yourself and we'll handle the transport only.
Budget
The cost of a private desert tour depends on three things:
- Vehicle and driver — a fixed price per vehicle for the whole tour, including fuel, tolls and the driver's food and lodging.
- Accommodation — from budget guesthouses to luxury camps.
- Meals, activities and tips — most hotels and camps include dinner and breakfast.

Best time to go
- March to May and September to November are ideal: warm days and cool nights.
- Summer is very hot (often 45 °C in Merzouga); tours are possible but the middle of the day is tough.
- Winter has pleasant days and freezing nights in the desert — bring warm clothes; camps provide thick blankets.

- A scarf or cheche to protect against sun and sand
