Camel Rides Near Marrakech: Palmeraie, Agafay, Essaouira or the Sahara?

A camel ride is on almost every Morocco wish list — and from Marrakech, you have more choice than you might think. You can ride through palm trees on the edge of the city, across a stone desert at sunset, along an Atlantic beach or into the great dunes of the Sahara. Each experience is different, and each requires a different amount of time. Here is how to choose.

First, a small detail: the animals you will ride in Morocco are dromedaries, with one hump. Everyone calls them camels, and so do we.

1. The Palmeraie: the easiest option

The Palmeraie is a vast palm grove on the northern edge of Marrakech, about 20 to 30 minutes from the medina. Rides usually last one to two hours, along sandy tracks between palm trees, often with a stop for mint tea in a traditional house. It is gentle, easy for children and perfect if you have only half a day.

  • Travel time: 20–30 minutes from the city
  • Best for: families, short stays, a first experience
  • Combine with: a quad ride, a spa afternoon or a dinner in the Palmeraie

2. Agafay at sunset: the desert feeling close to the city

Forty-five minutes south-west of Marrakech, the Agafay desert is a stone desert of rolling ochre hills with the snowy Atlas in the background. A camel ride at sunset, followed by dinner under the stars in a desert camp, is one of the most popular evenings around Marrakech. Rides typically last about an hour.

  • Travel time: about 45 minutes
  • Best for: couples, families, anyone who wants the desert atmosphere without a long drive
  • Good to know: Agafay has no big sand dunes — for those, you need the Sahara

Our Agafay desert trip includes the transfer in both directions, and our Agafay guide describes the experience.

3. Essaouira beach: camels by the ocean

On the long beach south of Essaouira, local guides offer camel rides along the sand and towards the dunes and the ruined fort at the end of the bay. Riding beside the Atlantic waves is a different and beautiful experience, easily added to an Essaouira day trip — allow an hour or two. Beaches near Agadir and Taghazout offer similar rides.

4. The Sahara: the real dunes

For the classic image — a caravan crossing golden dunes as the sun sets — you need to travel to Merzouga and the dunes of Erg Chebbi, about 9 to 10 hours’ drive from Marrakech. Most travellers go on a three-day tour, crossing the High Atlas, the Dades and the Todra gorges, then ride camels into the dunes for a night in a desert camp, with a sunrise over the sand the next morning. It is a journey rather than an excursion — and for many, the highlight of their trip.

Read our Merzouga tour guide or book the Merzouga desert tour. Short on time? Zagora in two days is a shorter alternative with smaller dunes.

Animal welfare: choosing a responsible operator

Most camel owners take good care of their animals — they are their livelihood. Still, a few simple checks help you choose well:

  • the camels look healthy, with no visible wounds, and have shade and water;
  • saddles are padded and well fitted;
  • rides are at a walking pace, with rests;
  • operators respect weight limits and do not overload animals.

If something feels wrong, you are free to decline — and tell your driver, who can suggest another place.

What to wear and bring

  • Long, comfortable trousers — shorts rub against the saddle.
  • Closed shoes or sandals with straps.
  • A scarf or hat and sunglasses, especially in the desert and on windy beaches.
  • A warm layer for sunset and evenings in Agafay or the Sahara.
  • Keep phones and cameras on a strap: camels stand up and kneel with a jolt.

Riding tips

Hold on firmly when the camel stands up — it rises back legs first, tipping you forward, then front legs. Lean back slightly, relax and let the animal’s rhythm carry you. Children usually love it; very young ones can ride with a parent.

In short

For an easy first ride, choose the Palmeraie; for the desert atmosphere in one evening, Agafay at sunset; for something different, Essaouira beach; and for the real dunes, a multi-day trip to the Sahara. Whatever you choose, we provide the private transfer — tell us your dates and we will organise the timing so you arrive for the best light.
