Lalla Takerkoust Lake: Swimming, Lunch and Sunset 40 Minutes from Marrakech

Few visitors expect to find a lake near Marrakech. Yet just 40 minutes south-west of the city, the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir stretches across a landscape of ochre hills, with the snow-capped High Atlas rising behind it. In summer, Marrakchi families come here to cool off; for travellers, it's an easy half-day escape with swimming, kayaking, lakeside lunches and some of the best sunset views in the region.

Where is Lalla Takerkoust?

The lake lies about 40 km south-west of Marrakech, on the road to Amizmiz, between the Kik plateau and the Agafay desert. It was created by a dam built in the 1930s on the N'Fis river, and today supplies water for irrigation and the city. The drive takes about 40 minutes from the Medina, through olive groves and small villages.

What to do at the lake

Lunch with a view. Several restaurants and small guesthouses along the shore serve tagines, grilled meat and salads on terraces facing the water and the mountains. It's the most popular way to enjoy the lake — slow, relaxed and beautiful.

Swimming. In summer, many people swim from the small beaches. There are no lifeguards, the water gets deep quickly and the shore can be muddy in places, so swim carefully and keep an eye on children.

Kayaking and paddle-boarding. Some lakeside venues rent kayaks or paddle boards — a peaceful way to see the lake from the water with the Atlas in front of you.

Quad and buggy rides. The hills around the lake and the neighbouring Agafay desert are popular for guided quad and buggy tours.

Walking and photography. Short walks along the shore and the nearby villages offer lovely views, especially in the soft light of late afternoon.

Lalla Takerkoust with children

The lake is one of the most family-friendly outings near Marrakech. The drive is short, there's space to run around on the shore, and children love throwing stones in the water, watching the kayaks or riding a camel in the neighbouring hills. Choose a restaurant with a shaded terrace and a garden, bring a change of clothes and water shoes, and keep a close eye on little ones near the water — there are no lifeguards. Child seats are available free of charge in our vehicles; just mention the children's ages when you book. Many families combine the lake with an early dinner in an Agafay camp and are back at their hotel by bedtime.

A little history

The lake bears the name of a local saint, Lalla Takerkoust, whose shrine stands in the village. The dam was built in the colonial era to regulate the N'Fis river and irrigate the Haouz plain; it has since been raised and modernised. The village below the dam remains a quiet farming community, and its weekly souk is a glimpse of rural life just a short drive from the city.

Best time to visit

  • Spring: green hills, snow on the peaks and pleasant temperatures — the most photogenic season.
  • Summer: the main season for swimming and lunches by the water; mornings and late afternoons are best.
  • Autumn: golden light, quiet terraces and warm days.
  • Winter: too cold for swimming, but the views of the snowy Atlas are spectacular on clear days.

Water levels vary from year to year depending on rainfall; after dry years the lake is smaller and the shoreline wider. Your driver knows the current conditions.

Combine it with the Agafay desert

Lalla Takerkoust sits right next to the Agafay desert, which makes the combination irresistible:

  • Afternoon: lunch and a swim at the lake.
  • Late afternoon: a camel ride or quad tour in Agafay.
  • Sunset: drinks and dinner in a desert camp.
  • Night: return to Marrakech with your driver.

This is one of the most popular half-day plans for couples and families. See our Agafay desert trip and the complete Agafay desert guide.

Combine it with the Atlas

The lake is also on the way to the High Atlas. On a day trip to Imlil and the Toubkal area, your driver can stop at the lake viewpoint on the way back for photos or a late lunch.

How to get there

There's no convenient public transport to the lakeside restaurants. A taxi can take you there, but finding one to return can be difficult, especially after sunset. With a private driver, you choose your timing, stop at viewpoints on the way and come back whenever you want. A half-day with our private driver in Marrakech is ideal.

A sample half day

  • 12:00 — pick-up at your hotel or riad.
  • 12:45 — arrival at the lake, lunch on a terrace.
  • 14:30 — swim, kayak or a walk along the shore.
  • 16:30 — short drive to Agafay for a camel ride.
  • 18:30 — sunset over the hills.
  • 19:30 — return to Marrakech, or dinner in a desert camp.

What to bring

  • Swimsuit, towel and water shoes in summer.
  • Sunscreen and a hat — there's little shade on the shore.
  • A light jacket for the evening.
  • Cash for lunch and activities.

Lalla Takerkoust shows a softer, greener side of the Marrakech region — and it's only 40 minutes away. Book your half-day trip and enjoy the lake at your own pace.
