Oukaïmeden: Skiing and Snow One Hour and a Half from Marrakech

Imagine having breakfast among the palm trees of Marrakech and skiing down snowy slopes before lunch. It sounds improbable, but it's possible a few weeks each winter. Oukaïmeden, perched in the High Atlas above the Ourika Valley, is one of the highest ski areas in Africa — a vast plateau surrounded by peaks, with a chairlift climbing to more than 3,000 metres. Even if you don't ski, a snow day in the Atlas is a surprising and memorable excursion.

Where is Oukaïmeden?

Oukaïmeden lies about 75 km south of Marrakech. The drive takes around 1h30: first along the Ourika road, then up a winding mountain road that climbs steeply from the valley to the plateau at around 2,600 m. On the way, the views over the Ourika Valley and the Haouz plain are superb.

The ski season

Snow in the Atlas is irregular. In a good year, the season runs roughly from January to March, sometimes starting in December or lasting into April. Some winters bring excellent snow; others very little. That's why we always check conditions before planning a ski day — there's no point driving up if the slopes are bare.

What to expect when the snow is good:

  • A chairlift climbing to the summit area, with long runs for confident skiers.
  • Several smaller drag lifts and beginner slopes near the base.
  • Off-piste terrain for experienced skiers, ideally with a local guide.
  • A simple, authentic atmosphere — this is not an Alpine resort, and that's part of the charm.

Equipment and lessons

Skis, boots, poles and sledges can be rented on site from local rental shops. Quality varies, so serious skiers sometimes prefer to bring their own boots. Local instructors and mountain guides offer lessons and guided outings. Bring warm clothes, gloves, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen: the sun is extremely strong at this altitude.

A snow day without skiing

Many visitors come simply to enjoy the snow:

  • Sledging with children on the gentle slopes.
  • Donkey and mule rides in the snow.
  • Short walks on the plateau with views of the surrounding peaks.
  • Hot drinks and tagine in a mountain café or refuge.

For families from warm countries, a first snowball fight at 2,600 m in Morocco is unforgettable.

Oukaïmeden in summer

When the snow melts, the plateau turns into high pastures where shepherds bring their flocks. It's a beautiful area for hiking, with fresh air and wide views. The plateau is also known for its prehistoric rock carvings — engravings of animals, weapons and symbols, some several thousand years old. A local guide can show you where to find them.

Road conditions and safety

The road to Oukaïmeden is paved but steep and winding. After heavy snowfall it can be icy, and access may be restricted until the road is cleared. On busy snow weekends, Moroccan families flock to the mountains and traffic can be heavy. An experienced mountain driver, a well-equipped vehicle and flexible timing make all the difference. We monitor conditions and may recommend an early departure or a different day. Read more about road safety in Morocco.

Staying overnight

A few simple hotels, mountain refuges and chalets operate on the plateau, mostly in winter. Spending a night lets you ski first thing in the morning, before the snow softens and the day-trippers arrive, and enjoy an incredibly starry sky. Comfort is basic compared with Marrakech, so pack warm clothes. Alternatively, stay in a lodge in the Ourika Valley, about 45 minutes below, and drive up early. We can organise one-way transfers and pick you up the next day.

Combine it with the Ourika Valley

On the way back, stop in the Ourika Valley for a riverside lunch or a visit to a Berber house — a perfect contrast between snow and greenery. See our Ourika Valley day trip and the Ourika guide.

Best time to go

  • January–March: best chance of snow for skiing and sledging.
  • April–June: melting snow, green pastures, pleasant hiking.
  • July–September: an escape from Marrakech's heat — the plateau stays cool.
  • October–December: quiet, crisp days; first snowfall sometimes in December.
