The fast motorway via Rabat, the scenic Middle Atlas road via Ifrane, or a three-day journey through the Sahara: how to choose the best way from Marrakech to Fes.

Marrakech to Fes by Private Driver: Three Routes Compared

Marrakech and Fes are Morocco's two great imperial cities, and most first-time visitors want to see both. But they're about 500 km apart, and there's no single obvious way to travel between them. Trains require a change and a long detour, buses are long and tiring, and flights don't save much time once you add airport transfers. With a private driver, you have three very different options. Here's how to choose.

Option 1: The motorway via Casablanca and Rabat (5h30–6h)

The fastest route follows the A7 motorway north to Casablanca, the A1 to Rabat, then the A2 east to Fes. Total distance is about 530 km, and the drive takes roughly 5h30 to 6 hours plus stops.

Best for: travellers who want to arrive quickly and comfortably, families with young children, or those with a flight from Fes.

Worth a stop: the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca (an hour or two), lunch in Rabat with a walk in the Kasbah of the Udayas, or a detour to Meknes and Volubilis — see our imperial cities tour.

Downside: motorway landscapes are pleasant but not spectacular.

Option 2: The Middle Atlas road via Beni Mellal, Azrou and Ifrane (7–8h)

The scenic route heads north-east through the agricultural plains of El Kelaa and Beni Mellal, then climbs into the Middle Atlas: the lakes and forests around Khenifra, the cedar forest of Azrou — home to Barbary macaques — and the surprising alpine town of Ifrane, with its sloping roofs and gardens. From Ifrane, Fes is about an hour away.

Best for: travellers who enjoy road trips, nature and photography, and want to see a completely different Morocco.

Worth a stop: the Ain Asserdoun spring and kasbah above Beni Mellal, the Ouzoud waterfalls (a detour of about 1h30 each way — see our Ouzoud guide), the cedar forest and Ifrane.

Downside: a long day — 7 to 8 hours of driving with stops. Many travellers split it with a night in the Middle Atlas.

Option 3: Through the Sahara in three days

The most spectacular option turns the journey into a tour: Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Dades Gorge → Todra Gorge → Merzouga (a night in the dunes) → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Ifrane → Fes. It's the classic Marrakech-to-Fes desert tour.

Best for: travellers who want to see the desert and are going to Fes anyway — it avoids driving back to Marrakech after Merzouga.

Worth knowing: it's three days of travel with long but beautiful drives. See our Merzouga private desert tour and the 3-day Sahara planning guide.

Sleeping in the Middle Atlas

If you choose the scenic route, a night in the mountains turns a long transfer into a highlight. Ifrane has comfortable hotels and a calm, almost European atmosphere; Azrou and the surrounding cedar forests offer guesthouses and lodges where you wake up to birdsong and cool air — a welcome change after Marrakech in summer. In winter, snow can fall around Ifrane, and the landscapes are magical; your driver monitors road conditions and adapts the timing. The next morning, Fes is only an hour away, so you arrive fresh with the whole afternoon to explore.

Comparison at a glance

  • Motorway: ~6h, fastest, comfortable, cities along the way.
  • Middle Atlas: ~7–8h, scenic, forests and macaques, ideal for nature lovers.
  • Desert: 3 days, the full Moroccan adventure, dunes and gorges.

Train, bus or private driver?

  • Train: Marrakech to Fes takes around 7 hours with a change, and stations are far from medina riads.
  • Bus: similar time, less comfort, limited luggage space.
  • Flight: short in the air, but with airport transfers and check-in it rarely saves time.
  • Private driver: door-to-door, flexible stops, all luggage handled — and for 3 or more travellers, often similar in price per person.

Our intercity transfers include Marrakech–Fes, with the route of your choice.

Arriving in Fes

Fes el-Bali is car-free: your driver drops you at the nearest gate — Bab Boujloud, Bab Guissa, Bab R'cif or another depending on your riad — where a porter takes your luggage. Share your riad name in advance. A licensed guide is highly recommended for your first visit to the medina.

Travelling with a group

For families or groups, a comfort van or VIP minibus makes the long journey easier, with space for luggage and room to stretch. Compare vehicles in choosing between a van and a minibus and read our tips for comfort on long road trips.

Our recommendation

  • Short on time? Take the motorway and stop in Rabat for lunch.
  • Love nature? Choose the Middle Atlas and sleep in Ifrane or Azrou.
  • Never seen the desert? Make the journey a three-day Sahara tour — it's worth it.

Tell us your priorities and dates, and we'll recommend the route that suits you best. Request your Marrakech–Fes quote or explore van hire with driver.
