Casablanca Airport to Rabat, Fes or Tangier: Long-Distance Private Transfers
Landing at Casablanca Mohammed V and heading north? Drive times, routes, train alternatives and the best way to reach Rabat, Fes or Tangier with luggage, children or a group.
Casablanca Mohammed V airport (CMN) is Morocco’s largest international hub, with direct flights from Europe, Africa, the Middle East and North America. Many travellers land there but are not staying in Casablanca: they are heading to Rabat, the imperial city of Fes or the northern port of Tangier. Here is how to make that first journey simple, especially with luggage, children or a group.
Where the airport is
The airport lies about 30 km south of central Casablanca, close to the motorway network. This is good news for long transfers: within minutes of leaving the car park, you are on the motorway heading north or east.
Distances and typical drive times
| Destination | Distance | Approx. drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Rabat | about 120 km | 1 h 30 |
| Meknes | about 260 km | 3 h |
| Fes | about 300 km | 3 h 30 |
| Tangier | about 360 km | 4 h |
| Chefchaouen | about 380 km | 5 h |
| Marrakech | about 220 km | 2 h 45 |
These times include an easy pace and assume normal traffic. Add a little for rest stops, which we recommend every two hours.
The routes
- To Rabat: a straight motorway run along the Atlantic. Rabat’s Kasbah of the Oudayas, the Hassan Tower and the medina are all reachable door-to-door or very close.
- To Fes: north to Rabat, then east via the motorway past Khemisset and Meknes. A coffee break near Meknes is a natural halfway point — or a longer stop to visit Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis on the way.
- To Tangier: the coastal motorway north via Rabat, Kenitra and Larache, a fast and pleasant road with views of the ocean towards the end.
- To Chefchaouen: the motorway towards Tangier, then mountain roads into the Rif. Our Chefchaouen guide has more ideas.
What about the train?
Morocco has good trains, including the high-speed Al Boraq line between Casablanca and Tangier, which takes just over two hours, and regular trains to Rabat, Meknes and Fes. A shuttle train also links the airport with Casablanca. For a solo traveller with a small bag, the train is excellent value.
For families and groups, however, the calculation changes: you need to get from the airport to the right station, change trains with luggage, then find a taxi at arrival — often with a riad hidden in a medina. A private transfer takes you door-to-door in one go, at a price per vehicle that becomes very competitive from three or four passengers. We compare both in detail for Marrakech in our Casablanca airport to Marrakech guide.
Making the most of the journey
A private transfer is also a chance to see a little of the country on the way:
- a short stop at the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca before heading north (see our Casablanca layover guide);
- lunch and a walk in Rabat’s Kasbah of the Oudayas;
- a detour to Meknes and Volubilis on the way to Fes;
- a seafood lunch in Larache or Asilah on the way to Tangier.
Tell us when booking; we will adjust the pick-up time and the price.
Arriving in Fes or Tangier medinas
As in Marrakech, cars cannot enter most of the old medinas. In Fes, drivers stop at gates such as Bab Bou Jeloud or at car parks near the riads, where riad staff or porters meet you. Tangier’s Kasbah is also partly pedestrian. Send us your accommodation’s name and phone number, and we will coordinate the meeting point — our guide to getting to your riad explains how it works.
Which vehicle?
- 1–4 travellers: our premium SUV or a comfort van for extra luggage space.
- Up to 8 travellers: a comfort van — Mercedes Vito or Fiat Scudo.
- Couples and VIPs: the VIP Ford Tourneo Custom with captain seats.
- Groups up to 17: our VIP minibus with a dedicated luggage area.
Compare them in choosing between a van and a minibus.
Late arrivals and overnight stops
Many long-haul flights land in Casablanca in the evening. Driving four hours to Tangier or Fes after a long flight is perfectly possible — our drivers are used to it and the motorways are good — but some travellers prefer to sleep near the airport or in Rabat and continue the next morning, rested and in daylight. Both options work; tell us your preference and we will plan pick-up times accordingly. If you are continuing to Marrakech instead, our Casablanca airport transfer is the most requested route of all.
Practical tips
- Send your flight number: we track delays and wait for you, whatever happens.
- Allow a bit more time on Friday afternoons and around public holidays.
- For very long days, consider breaking the trip with a night in Rabat or Meknes.
- Keep water and snacks handy; we always carry bottled water on board.
In short
From Casablanca airport, Rabat is an hour and a half away, Fes and Tangier around four hours. With a private driver, that first journey becomes a comfortable start to your trip rather than a logistics puzzle. See our intercity transfers or imperial cities tour, and send us your plan for a fixed price per vehicle.
