Agadir Airport to Essaouira: A Private Transfer Along the Atlantic Coast
Fly into Agadir and reach Essaouira by the scenic coast road: travel time, the best stops between Taghazout and Cap Sim, and how to time your arrival.
Essaouira has no major international airport of its own, so most visitors arrive through Marrakech. But for many travellers — especially those flying from regional European airports — Agadir Al Massira (AGA) is the most convenient gateway. The good news: the road from Agadir to Essaouira is one of the most beautiful drives in Morocco, hugging the Atlantic for long stretches between surf villages, argan forests and wild headlands.
How far is Essaouira from Agadir airport?
The distance is roughly 200 km, and the drive takes about 3 hours without long stops. The airport lies inland, south-east of Agadir; your driver takes the ring road around the city, then follows the N1 north along the coast. There's no motorway on this route, but the road is good and generally quiet outside Agadir.
The route and the best stops
Taghazout and Tamraght (about 45 minutes). The famous surf villages, with colourful houses and cafés overlooking the point breaks. A perfect first coffee stop after the flight.
The coast to Tamri. North of Taghazout the road climbs above the cliffs, with spectacular viewpoints over empty beaches. Around Tamri, you'll pass banana plantations — surprising in this landscape — and a long sandy bay at the river mouth.
Imsouane (optional detour). A small fishing village famous for one of the longest right-hand waves in Africa. The detour adds about an hour in total, but the bay and the fresh fish lunch are worth it if you have time.
Argan country. From Tamanar northwards, the road crosses the heart of the argan forest. Women's cooperatives along the route show how argan oil is made, and between summer and autumn you may see goats climbing in the trees.
Approach to Essaouira. The last section passes the dunes near Diabat and the Cap Sim area, before the white walls of Essaouira appear by the ocean.
Where to stop for lunch
The coast road is lined with simple restaurants serving the catch of the day. In Taghazout and Tamraght, terraces overlook the surf; around Tamri and Imsouane, small places grill fish and serve tagines with ocean views. If you prefer to arrive quickly, your driver can suggest a quick, clean stop with restrooms. Tell us your preference when booking — a long seafood lunch or a direct transfer are both possible.
When to travel
Daylight is best to enjoy the views; if your flight lands in the afternoon, consider stopping in Taghazout for the night and continuing in the morning. In winter, the sun sets early, so plan your stops accordingly. If you land late at night, the drive is perfectly safe with a professional driver — you'll simply miss the scenery. Arriving in Essaouira
Essaouira's Medina is pedestrian. Your driver drops you at the nearest gate — Bab Sbaa, Bab Doukkala or the harbour — where porters with handcarts take luggage to riads. Beachfront hotels and countryside guesthouses (Diabat, Ghazoua, Sidi Kaouki) are accessible by car. Share your accommodation name so we choose the best drop-off point. Combining Essaouira, the coast and Marrakech
Agadir makes a great starting point for a coast-to-city itinerary:
- Agadir airport → Essaouira (3 hours) for 2–3 nights by the ocean.
- Essaouira → Marrakech (about 2h45) for 3–4 nights.
- Marrakech airport for your flight home.
Or the other way round: start in Marrakech, end with surf and sunshine in Taghazout, and fly home from Agadir. See our multi-city itinerary by private van and our intercity transfers.
Bus or private transfer?
Coaches link Agadir and Essaouira several times a day, but they leave from the city's bus station, not the airport — so you'd need a taxi to reach it, and then wait for a departure that matches your flight. With a private transfer, you leave as soon as you land, stop where you like, and travel only with your group. For two or more passengers with luggage, the difference in cost per person is small, while the difference in comfort is huge.
Surfers and kitesurfers
Essaouira and Sidi Kaouki are top destinations for kitesurfing and windsurfing, while the coast between Taghazout and Imsouane is a surfer's paradise. Boards and kite bags travel inside our vans — just tell us how many you have. Read our article on surf-friendly transfers from Agadir airport.
