Marrakech Airport to Essaouira: Direct Private Transfer Guide

Essaouira doesn't have many international flights, so most visitors reach the windy city through Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK). The good news is that you don't need to stop in Marrakech at all: a direct private transfer takes you from the arrivals hall to the Atlantic in under three hours. Here's how it works and how to make the journey part of the holiday.

Distance and travel time

Essaouira is about 190 km west of Marrakech airport. Because RAK sits on the western edge of Marrakech, you avoid the city traffic completely. The drive takes around 2 hours 45 minutes on the R207/N8 road via Chichaoua or the newer road via Sidi Mokhtar, depending on traffic and roadworks. The road is good, mostly straight, crossing farmland and then the argan forests that cover the region inland from Essaouira.

Your options

Bus: Supratours and CTM coaches run between Marrakech and Essaouira several times a day. They are comfortable and affordable, but they leave from their stations in Marrakech, not from the airport. You'd need a taxi to the station, a wait for the next departure, and another taxi or porter at Essaouira's bus station.

Grand taxi: shared grand taxis leave from Marrakech's Bab Doukkala station. They're cheap but cramped, with luggage on the roof, and you'll need to get there first.

Private transfer: your driver meets you in the RAK arrivals hall with your name on a sign and drives you directly to Essaouira, door to door. You leave when you land, stop when you want, and travel with your own group only. See our intercity transfers for prices.

Making the most of the drive

A direct transfer is also an opportunity:

  • Argan cooperatives line the road in the last 50 km. Women crack the nuts by hand and produce cosmetic and culinary argan oil. A 20-minute visit is fascinating — and the oil is much cheaper than in Europe.
  • Goats in the trees: from summer to early autumn, goats climb argan trees to eat the fruit. It's one of the most unusual sights in Morocco.
  • Lunch stop: small roadside restaurants in Chichaoua serve excellent grilled meat and tagines.
  • Viewpoint over Essaouira: as you approach, the road descends towards the ocean with a sweeping view over the bay and the white Medina.

Arriving in Essaouira

Essaouira's Medina is pedestrian, compact and easy to navigate, but cars can't enter. Your driver will drop you at Bab Doukkala, Bab Sbaa or the harbour car park, depending on your riad's location. Porters with wooden trolleys (called carrossas) wait at each gate and will take your luggage to the door for a small fee. As always, give us your riad's exact name so the driver chooses the best gate and can call ahead.

If you're staying outside the Medina — in the beach-side hotels, the Diabat area or a villa in the countryside — we drive you right to the entrance.

Where to stay in Essaouira

The Medina is the most atmospheric choice: riads with roof terraces overlooking the ocean, everything within walking distance, and the harbour five minutes away. The beachfront south of the Medina offers larger hotels with pools and easy beach access, ideal for families. For peace and nature, guesthouses around Diabat and Ghazoua sit among argan trees a few kilometres from town, while Sidi Kaouki, 25 minutes south, is a favourite with surfers and kitesurfers. Wherever you stay, we drop you as close as possible to the door.

Best time to go

Essaouira is pleasant all year round. Summer is warm but rarely hot, thanks to the constant trade winds — ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing, and a welcome escape from Marrakech's 40 °C. Spring and autumn are perfect for walking the ramparts and exploring the souks. In June, the famous Gnaoua World Music Festival fills the city with music and visitors: book transport early.

Combining Essaouira and Marrakech

A typical plan is Marrakech airport → Essaouira (2–4 nights) → Marrakech (3–4 nights) → airport. We handle each leg, and you can keep the same driver if you wish. Some travellers prefer the reverse, or continue south along the coast to Agadir and Taghazout, a stunning 3-hour drive past Sidi Kaouki and the Cap Sim lighthouse.

For your flight home, allow about 3 hours for the drive plus 2.5 to 3 hours at the airport, so leave Essaouira around 5.5 to 6 hours before take-off. Your driver will confirm the pick-up time the day before.
