Ouirgane and the Tizi n’Test Road: An Off-the-Beaten-Track Atlas Day Trip
Red valleys, a lake among the mountains and the historic Tinmel mosque: discover the quiet side of the High Atlas south of Marrakech, and travel responsibly in a region rebuilding after the 2023 earthquake.
Most visitors to the High Atlas follow the same two valleys: the Ourika and the road to Imlil. South of Asni, however, another road continues deeper into the mountains — the R203 towards the Tizi n'Test pass, one of the oldest and most dramatic crossings of the Atlas. Along it lie the quiet valley of Ouirgane, red-earth villages, juniper forests and the historic site of Tinmel. For travellers who want to see the mountains without the crowds, it's a rewarding private day trip.
A region rebuilding
This part of the Atlas was close to the epicentre of the September 2023 earthquake, and many villages were badly affected. Reconstruction has been progressing, roads have been repaired and reopened in stages, and many guesthouses and lodges welcome visitors again. Travelling here today means supporting local families whose income depends on tourism — but it also means checking current conditions. We always verify road status and site access before departure, and adapt the itinerary if necessary.
The route
Marrakech → Asni (about 1 hour). The road crosses the Haouz plain and climbs through the Moulay Brahim gorges. Asni, with its Saturday souk, is a classic stop.
Asni → Ouirgane (about 20 minutes). The valley opens up around the Ouirgane lake, a reservoir surrounded by red hills, pine and juniper forests. Ouirgane is known for its peaceful lodges and gardens, a favourite weekend retreat for Marrakchis.
Ouirgane → Ijoukak and Tinmel. The road follows the N'Fis river through a deep valley of terraced fields and earthen villages. Near Ijoukak, the landscape becomes wilder and more dramatic.
Tinmel. In the 12th century, Tinmel was the spiritual birthplace of the Almohad dynasty, which went on to rule an empire from Spain to Tunisia and built the Koutoubia in Marrakech. Its great mosque, one of the very few in Morocco historically open to non-Muslim visitors, was seriously damaged in 2023 and has been the subject of major restoration work. Depending on the progress of the works, you may only see it from the outside — your driver will confirm before you go.
Towards the Tizi n'Test. Beyond Tinmel, the road climbs in tight bends towards the pass (over 2,000 m), with immense views over the Souss plain on the other side. The full crossing to Taroudant is a long and demanding drive; on a day trip, most travellers turn back at a viewpoint before the pass.
What to do along the way
- Walk in Ouirgane: easy trails along the river and through villages, with a local guide if you wish.
- Lunch in a lodge garden: Ouirgane's guesthouses serve excellent home-cooked meals among olive and fruit trees.
- Village visits: with a local guide, meet families and learn about mountain agriculture and reconstruction projects.
- Photography: red-earth villages, terraced fields and the contrasting greens of the river valley.
- Horse or mule rides offered by some lodges around Ouirgane.
Why go with a private driver
The R203 is a mountain road with narrow sections, roadworks and changing conditions. An experienced driver who knows the area makes the journey both safer and more interesting — stopping at the right viewpoints, knowing where to eat and adapting the day to the weather and the road. Read about road safety in Morocco.
Best season
Spring (green fields, blossom, snow on the peaks) and autumn (golden light, stable weather) are ideal. Summer is warm in the valleys but pleasant in the mountains; winter can bring snow on the higher sections, and the pass may close temporarily.
