From Marrakech Airport Straight to the Desert or the Mountains: Agafay Camp & Atlas Lodge Transfers

More and more travellers skip the city on their first night. Instead of heading into the busy Medina, they go straight from the plane to a luxury tent in the Agafay desert or a stone lodge in the High Atlas — and wake up to silence, open views and birdsong. It's a wonderful way to land in Morocco, but it requires a reliable transfer: these places are outside the city, sometimes at the end of dirt tracks, and often reached after dark.

Why start your trip outside Marrakech?

  • Instant decompression after a long flight: no traffic, no noise, just space.
  • A memorable first image of Morocco — a sunset over golden hills or snowy peaks.
  • Better sleep in the cool, quiet countryside.
  • Easy logistics — you can visit Marrakech at the end of your trip, when you're rested and ready for the souks.

Marrakech airport to the Agafay desert

The Agafay desert lies about 40 to 50 minutes south-west of Marrakech airport. The road crosses the Kik plateau on good asphalt; the last few kilometres to most camps are on dirt tracks, which are fine in a well-driven van but confusing at night. Your driver knows the camps, calls ahead if needed and drops you right at reception.

Ask yourself one question: do you want to stop in Marrakech on the way? Some travellers like to pick up a SIM card, cash or supplies first; others go straight to the desert. Both are possible with a private transfer. Learn more about the area in our Agafay desert guide and our Agafay trip.

Marrakech airport to the Ourika Valley

Lodges and guesthouses along the Ourika road are 45 minutes to 1h15 from the airport, depending on how far up the valley you stay. The road is paved all the way, winding gently along the river in its upper part. Some guesthouses are on the hillside, reached by a short walk — your driver will help with luggage and call your hosts to send someone down.

Marrakech airport to Imlil and the Toubkal area

Imlil is about 1h30 from the airport. The last section climbs from Asni through the Rheraya valley to 1,740 m. Many lodges in Imlil and the surrounding villages can only be reached on foot or by mule for the final stretch: luggage is loaded onto a mule while you walk up a few minutes. It's part of the charm — but plan light luggage and arrive in daylight if possible. See our Imlil and Toubkal article.

Arriving at night

Many flights land in the evening. A night arrival in the countryside is perfectly fine with a professional driver, but keep in mind:

  • Mountain roads are unlit and winding; an experienced driver adapts his speed.
  • Dirt tracks to desert camps are hard to find in the dark — never rely on a random taxi.
  • Let your camp or lodge know your arrival time, especially if dinner is planned.
  • Bring a warm layer: nights in the desert and mountains are cold, even in spring.

Your flight is tracked, so if you land late your driver adjusts automatically. Read more about late-night flights.

Luggage and the last mile

Desert camps usually have a small parking area near reception; luxury camps often send staff with a buggy. In the mountains, luggage may travel the last metres by mule. Travelling with large suitcases? Consider leaving one in Marrakech (many riads or hotels will store it) and taking a smaller bag for the countryside. Our van luggage guide helps you plan.

Building the rest of the trip

A popular plan is airport → desert or mountains (1–2 nights) → Marrakech (3–4 nights) → airport. We take care of each leg:

  • Agafay to Marrakech: about 45 minutes.
  • Imlil to Marrakech: about 1h30, with optional stops at Asni or Lalla Takerkoust lake.
  • Ourika to Marrakech: about 1 hour.
  • Agafay or Imlil to the airport directly at the end of your trip.

Prices and booking

Transfers to Agafay, Ourika or Imlil are priced as fixed-rate private transfers per vehicle, according to distance — ask us for a quote with your camp or lodge name. Our standard Marrakech airport transfer includes meet & greet, flight tracking, bottled water and waiting time; the same applies to countryside transfers.

Checklist for a countryside arrival

  • Share the exact name and location of your camp or lodge.
  • Tell us if you want a stop in Marrakech on the way.
  • Pack a warm layer and a small overnight bag.
  • Confirm dinner timing with your hosts.

Starting your trip under the stars or among the mountains is the best decompression after a flight. Request your transfer and wake up somewhere unforgettable.
