Leaving Marrakech: The Complete Departure Day Guide for RAK Airport

Holidays in Marrakech often end the same way: a last mint tea on the roof terrace, a suitcase that suddenly seems much smaller than on arrival, and the nagging question of when to leave for the airport. Departure day deserves as much planning as arrival day. Here's how to leave Marrakech calmly and catch your flight without running.

How early should you leave for Marrakech airport?

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is only 15 to 30 minutes from most hotels and riads, which tempts many travellers to leave late. The drive is short, but the airport process is not. Our recommendation for international flights:

  • Leave your accommodation 3 hours before departure in high season (spring holidays, summer, Christmas and New Year).
  • Leave 2.5 hours before outside peak periods.
  • Add 15 minutes if your riad is deep inside the Medina and you need a porter to reach the car.

For flights from Casablanca or Agadir, add the road time: about 2h45 to Casablanca Mohammed V and about 3 hours to Agadir Al Massira. Read our Casablanca airport to Marrakech comparison if you're flying out of CMN.

Why the airport takes time

At RAK, security happens twice: a first screening at the terminal entrance, then a second one after check-in and passport control. In high season, each step can involve a queue, and passport control for departing passengers is often the slowest part. Low-cost airlines also close check-in and bag drop strictly on time — there's no negotiation once the desk closes.

The day before departure

A few simple tasks the evening before make the morning easy:

  • Check in online and download your boarding pass.
  • Weigh your luggage: many riads can lend a scale. Remember that rugs, ceramics and argan oil add up quickly.
  • Confirm your transfer: send your flight number and departure time to your driver so he can suggest the right pick-up time.
  • Settle your bill at the riad so you don't wait at reception in the morning.
  • Ask for a breakfast box if you leave before breakfast is served.

Packing souvenirs the smart way

  • Argan oil, olive oil and cosmetics over 100 ml must go in checked luggage. Wrap bottles in plastic bags and clothes.
  • Ceramics and tagines travel best wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in the middle of your suitcase. Many shops will wrap them for you.
  • Rugs can be folded tightly or shipped by the seller — ask for a written shipping receipt.
  • Spices are allowed but pack them in sealed bags to keep your clothes from smelling of cumin for months.

Your last dirhams

The Moroccan dirham is a closed currency, which means you can't easily buy or sell it outside Morocco. Plan to spend most of your cash before leaving, keep exchange receipts if you want to change dirhams back at the airport, and keep a few coins for a coffee after security. Card payment is accepted in airport shops and cafés.

Leaving a riad in the Medina

Cars can't reach most riads, so the morning of departure needs a little coordination. Ask your riad to arrange a porter with a trolley, and tell your driver which gate or square to wait at. With our Marrakech airport transfer, the driver calls the riad in advance and meets you at the agreed point, so you never drag a suitcase over cobblestones. We describe how riad access works in our complete Marrakech airport guide.

Early-morning flights

Many flights to Europe leave between 06:00 and 08:00, which means leaving your riad around 03:30 to 05:00. Taxis are rare at that hour and the Medina is dark and silent. A pre-booked transfer is by far the easiest option — your driver is waiting at the exact time agreed, whatever the hour. See our tips for late-night and early-morning flights.

Make the most of a late flight

If your flight leaves in the evening, don't waste your last day sitting in a hotel lobby. Many riads keep your luggage after check-out, and a private driver for half a day can take you to the Majorelle Garden, a hammam or a lunch in the Palmeraie, keep your bags safely in the vehicle and drive you to the airport at the right time.

At the airport

Your driver drops you right in front of the departures entrance. From there:

  1. Pass the first security check at the door.
  2. Find your airline's desk on the departures board and drop your bags.
  3. Fill in any departure form if required and go through passport control.
  4. Pass the second security check.
  5. Relax — the departure area has cafés, a pharmacy and shops for last-minute gifts.

Our departure-day checklist

  • Leave 2.5 to 3 hours before an international flight.
  • Online check-in done, boarding pass on your phone.
  • Liquids over 100 ml in checked luggage.
  • Transfer confirmed the day before.
  • Passport, phone charger and a pen in your hand luggage.

A smooth departure leaves a good last impression of Morocco. Book your return transfer at the same time as your arrival, and we'll take care of the timing.
