Multi-Day Tours with a Private Driver: Where Your Driver Sleeps, Daily Hours and Flexibility
Planning a road trip with a driver for several days? The practical answers travellers ask about: the driver’s accommodation and meals, daily driving hours, changes to the plan, guides, luggage, tips and payment.
A road trip through Morocco with your own driver — over the Atlas, through the kasbah valleys, into the Sahara and along the coast — is one of the best ways to discover the country. But if you have never done it, practical questions come up: where does the driver sleep? How many hours do we drive each day? Can we change the plan? Here are honest answers, based on the tours we run every week.
How it works in practice
On a multi-day tour, the same driver and the same vehicle stay with you from the first day to the last. Each morning, he picks you up at your hotel at the agreed time; your luggage stays safely in the vehicle all day; in the evening, he drops you at the next accommodation. Between the two, you stop wherever you like — viewpoints, villages, lunches, visits.
You can book a classic itinerary such as our Merzouga desert tour, or build your own with van hire with driver.
Where does the driver sleep?
This is the question we hear most. The driver’s accommodation is our responsibility, not yours, and it is included in the price. In most hotels, kasbahs and desert camps used by travellers, there are rooms reserved for drivers and guides. Sometimes he stays in a guesthouse nearby. You never have to book or pay for his room.
And his meals?
Drivers usually eat separately: hotels and restaurants on the main routes often have arrangements for them. If you would like to invite him to share a meal, it is a kind gesture that is always appreciated — but never expected.
Daily driving hours
A good itinerary balances distance and pleasure. As a guideline:
- Typical day: 3 to 6 hours of driving, spread with stops.
- Long days (for example the return from the Sahara): up to 7 hours with regular breaks.
- Breaks: about every two hours, for coffee, toilets and stretching.
Our drivers avoid long stretches of mountain driving at night whenever possible. Read our table of distances and drive times to understand why some short distances take longer.
Evening arrival at a kasbah hotel: the van and your luggage stay with you for the whole tour.
How flexible is the itinerary?
Very — within reason. You can:
- stop for photos whenever you want;
- shorten or extend a visit;
- add a short detour, a market or a cooperative;
- change the lunch stop.
Bigger changes — another overnight town, an extra day, a different route — are usually possible too, but they may affect hotel bookings and the price, so tell us as early as possible. Your driver will always suggest the best timing for the light, the traffic and the weather.
Driver or guide?
Your driver is a professional driver who knows the roads, the regions and the good places to stop, and he will happily share what he knows. However, in Morocco, guided visits of medinas and monuments are reserved for licensed official guides. For a visit of Fes medina or Marrakech’s monuments, we can arrange an official guide for a half-day or a full day. In the desert, camel guides take over for the ride into the dunes.
Accommodation along the way
You can choose your own hotels or let us suggest some. On classic routes, accommodation ranges from simple family guesthouses to luxury kasbahs and desert camps. Send us your preferences and budget; we will align the driving times with your bookings and check vehicle access, which matters for riads in old medinas — see getting to your riad.
Luggage and comfort
Your suitcases stay in the vehicle throughout the tour, so you only take a small bag into hotels if you like. Our comfort vans (Mercedes Vito, Fiat Scudo), our VIP Ford Tourneo Custom and our 17-seat VIP minibus are air-conditioned, with bottled water on board. For long days, read our comfort tips for long drives.
Payment, tips and what is included
Our prices for tours are per vehicle, including the driver, fuel, tolls and the driver’s accommodation and meals. Your own hotels, meals, entrance fees and activities are usually separate unless stated in the quote. At the end of a multi-day tour, it is customary to tip the driver if you are happy with the service — our tipping and etiquette guide gives usual amounts.
Before you go: a short checklist
- Agree the itinerary, the nightly stops and what is included in writing.
- Share flight details for the first and last day.
- Mention children’s ages and the child seats you need.
- Tell us about mobility needs, diets or motion sickness.
- Keep the driver’s and our office’s WhatsApp numbers saved.
In short
A multi-day tour with a private driver is a trip without logistics: the same vehicle and driver every day, your luggage always with you, and freedom to stop wherever the landscape asks for it. The driver’s room and meals are taken care of, daily distances are planned sensibly, and the itinerary adapts to you. Tell us your ideas — we will turn them into a plan, with a fixed price per vehicle.
